Girls golfers set for sectionals

Team finishes with 11-2 record

Coach Dave Patz likes what he has seen out of his girls golf team this season.
“Overall, I feel our team is playing well,” Patz said. “I am still concerned about our depth.”
The girls finished the regular season Wednesday evening by splitting a three-way meet with Roncalli (163) and Franklin Central (209). Ben Davis shot a 180 and was led by junior Ellie Neff with a 3-over-par 39. The girls finish the regular season with a 11-2 record and play Friday in sectional action at South Grove.
The girls finished strong despite not having senior Madyson Elmore for several matches as she dealt with a wrist injury. She is out for the season.
“When Madyson was healthy, we had five solid players,” Patz said. “If one of the girls had a bad round, usually the other four would be playing well and we could still win or perform well in tournaments.
“Without Madyson in the lineup we do not have that luxury. Aminah (sophomore Aminah El-Abiad) has done a great job of improving, but she is still not to the level that Madyson was playing.  So, we will need Ellie (Neff), Claire (Thompson), Danielle (Fishburn), and Sarah (Gaither) to have good rounds.”
The top three teams advance past sectionals.
“Carmel is pretty much a lock to get out of the sectionals, but the other two spots are up for grabs,” Patz said. “I think Guerin Catholic and Brebeuf are fighting with us for those spots.  If we play well, I am confident we will move on to regionals.”
Patz has been enjoyed watching his team inprove this year.
“We have had a solid season,” he said. “We finished 11-2 in match play, second in the county and third in the conference. Ellie and Claire were named to the all-conference and all-county teams but we still have not had that one match when all five girls play their best golf.
In tournament play, we can not advance without them all having their best rounds on the same day.”
In other action Wednesday, the boys tennis team improved to 9-4 with a 3-2 win over Avon. The boys host the MIC tournament Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
