Girls golfers win opener

Veteran team sets lofty goals

The girls golf team returns four of its six top players from the 2013 season.  They had a great season last year ending with an 11 -2 record.   They have a tall order tying to replace Academic All State performer Madyson Elmore, who graduated and is playing for Franklin College.

The team was very balanced in scoring in 2013.  Medalist Ellie Neff returns for her senior year with the lowest average from 2013. She had a 41.7 nine-hole average, which lead to becoming an All MIC conference and All Marion County golfer.

Senior Claire Thompson was close behind her with a nine-hole average of 42.9.  Thompson had some amazing accomplishments when she shot a school record of 2-under-par 35 and was also an All MIC and All Marion County golfer.

Coach Dave Patz also has high hopes for the underclassmen that played in the top five last season. Sarah Gaither averaged a 47.9 and Danielle Fishburn averaged 46.5.  The remaining spots will be filled by Holly Lindsay or freshmen Adrienne Pemberton and Berkeley Lile.

The team is full of potential, but Patz is looking for more consistent work ethic to improve as a team.  If they do, this could be a very exciting year for the Giants.

This season the team goals remain the same.  The team would like to finish towards the top of the leaderboard in the Marion County tournament and the MIC Conference tournament.

The MIC conference tournament will have a new venue after playing at Oak Tree Golf Course for the past 10 years. The conference will be played at the new home of the state finals, Prairie View Golf Course.  They hope to end the season with a strong showing in the IHSAA sectional and advance to the IHSAA regional.

The Giants started their season with a victory over Lawrence Central High School and Lawrence North High School. Low medalist was Neff with a score of 39, following closely was Thompson with 41.

The Giants rounded out score wise very nicely, Gaither shot 44, Fishburn with a 47 and freshmen Pemberton with a 53.

The Giants started the year in the exact way that they wanted to. They play again against Warren Central High School tonight and Southport High School on Thursday.
