Giants to open with Avon

But first, it is championship week

The Class 6A No. 2 Giants will host Avon in first-round sectional action on Oct. 25. In the other sectional 5 game, Brownsburg visits Pike.

This is the first year for Class 6A in the state. The new class will have only two sectional games and the two teams advancing to the state final game will have two weeks to prepare for the championship game.

The game against Avon will be the first game between the two schools since a 64-41 Ben Davis sectional championship game victory in 2011. Avon will be added to the Giants regular season schedule next season, replacing the week two game this season against Cincinnati St. Xavier.

If the Giants win, they could host Pike in the sectional championship game. Pike defeated Ben Davis 35-25 in the first round of sectionals last season and Ben Davis won this year’s regular season matchup 49-48 in overtime in Lucas Oil Stadium, the start of a current four-game win streak for the Giants.

Before the state tournament begins, the Giants have a shot at winning their second straight Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference championship. The Giants host Carmel this Friday with the winner sharing the conference championship with Center Grove. Ben Davis beat then No. 1 Carmel 13-7 in last year’s regular season finale to win the MIC crown outright.
