After a tough 3-7 season last year, Ben Davis decided to make a change by hiring a new head football coach. The school and players hope the new coach can change things around from last season and be above 500. .
The new coach, Brett Cooper, brings experience both as a player and as a coach.
“Coaching wise I’ve been a few places over in the Ohio area. I coached at Cincinnati La Salle, then our head coach got a coaching job in Massillon Ohio, so I followed him. After that, I decided I wanted to be a head coach, so I came back and took the head coaching job at Indian Creek. After that, I went from Perry Meridian to Bloomington North. And now I’m here,” Cooper said.
Coach Cooper has over 20 years of coaching experience, but he also played college ball.
“I went to high school on the west side of Chicago, stayed in Chicago, and went to a D3 school in Chicago called North Park University. I played baseball and football, and I was a pitcher and quarterback,” Cooper said.
Ben Davis has a strong football tradition, and many people still believe that Ben Davis is one of the best teams in the state. Coach Cooper hopes to make these thoughts true and keep the direction of the team towards another state title.
The Giants open the season in less than three months against annual state power Cathedral. BD has only three home games on the schedule next season with the traditional home game against Lawrence North being switched to a Saturday evening game at Lucas Oil.
With the new season less than 90 days away, Cooper hopes to start off with a win and continue the legacy of Ben Davis football
