Crazy MIC football faces interesting weekend

Giants have tough road test at No. 1 Center Grove

The MIC is proving itself to be a crazy football conference this season.

Two weeks ago Ben Davis rallied from a 22-7 deficit to beat Pike 49-48 in overtime. Last Friday, Pike fell behind 28-0, scored two touchdowns in a span of nine seconds and rallied to beat Warren Central 38-28.

There are two major games in the conference this Friday that could alter the contenders for the conference championship.

Class 6A No. 3 Ben Davis travels to Class 6A No. 1 Center Grove for the state’s game of the week and Carmel vs. Warren Central is another big match up. If Carmel loses then they will be knocked out of contention for the conference title, but if they win it will keep them on track to winning the conference championship.

It is a big game for Ben Davis. If the Giants they win then they will be on track to repeating as conference champions, but if they lose they will have to look to the postseason to get a championship. Coming off of a two-game winning streak the Giants look to continue success against the Trojans, and end CG’s undefeated season.

Ben Davis has faced Center Grove every year since 1998 and the Giants have gotten the best of the matchup, leading the series 12-8. The two teams faced off twice before 1998, once in 1945 and didn’t play again until 1988. However, BD has won just one of the last seven games the two teams have played, a 42-14 win at Center Grove two years ago.

The Giants have faced off against Center Grove in the postseason three times, all in semi-state. Center Grove has beaten the Giants in the postseason match up twice while the Giants have won once. Last year the Giants lost to Center Grove by a field goal.

The Trojans have managed to rack up 1,064 rushing yards, 870 passing yards, and 168 total points this season.  The Giants, on the other hand, have racked up 1,638 total yards and 159 total points this season.

Tomorrow night’s game will be one for the books. It could determine the conference champion and it is CG’s homecoming game. The Giants look to build on their recent success, and the Trojans look to maintain their success all season. Kickoff is at 7.
