Despite being without senior captain Madyson Elmore, the girls golf team started the 2013-14 Ben Davis athletic calendar with a 171-188 win over Warren Central Monday at South Grove.

Elmore was home ill for the first match of the season, but junior Ellie Neff led the Giants with a 3-over par 39.

“I think the overall score of 171 was a great starting score,” coach Dave Patz said. “The highlight was Ellie’s 39. She did not hit a lot of fairways or greens, but only had 14 putts, which is why she was able to score well.”

The girls first match last week was rained out, so Monday’s match became the first athletic contest of this school year. Patz was pleased with the result.

“I was actually surprised that we looked really nervous on the first hole,” he said. “We did not get off the first tee very well, but as the nerves seem to settle down the team played more like they are capable of playing.”
