If you’re looking for an easy way to get into the Christmas spirit, movies are a great option to turn to. Cozying up by the fire, making a cup of hot chocolate, or baking some festive treats are all great options to accompany a Christmas movie night.

Some of the best movies that have been made are based on the holidays, so here are ten of the best ones to consider next time you’re looking for something to watch.

10) Starting off with a classic from the 1980’s, A Christmas Story has continued to be a beloved holiday film over the years. The movie follows Ralphie Parker, a boy who is trying to convince Santa that a BB gun is the ideal Christmas gift for him. This is a lighthearted, comedic film that is perfect for families to watch together. During the movie, you might recognize the iconic Leg Lamp in the window of the house. The film is full of other iconic characters and moments, and it’s definitely worth the watch!

9) Let It Snow is a fairly new film found on Netflix. This romantic comedy follows a group of high schoolers around their small Midwestern town after a snowstorm hits on Christmas Eve. The film essentially follows three different interconnecting storylines, which really grabs the attention of the audience and keeps you hooked. Based on the novel by John Green and accompanying authors, Let It Snow is a cozy film that is sure to get you in the spirit this season.

8) Another classic film, Christmas Vacation, follows the iconic Griswold family through their hectic Christmas preparations. Clark Griswold wants to have a perfect Christmas for his family, but despite the efforts, things quickly turn to chaos. This film has the perfect touch of comedy and memorable elements to keep you wanting to watch it again and again. Many people say this is one they watch multiple times each year, and it’s a perfect film to watch by the tree with your family.

7) Following a curious young boy who boards a mysterious train on late Christmas Eve, The Polar Express is a warm and cozy feeling film. A magical journey to the North Pole, unexpected friendships, and enchanted cups of hot chocolate are all featured throughout this movie. You can forget your reality by falling into the magical ambiance that this movie presents. This is a highly recommended film every year, and for good reason. It should definitely be on your list!

6) It’s almost certain that everyone has heard of the popular holiday character, Rudolph. Rudolph makes appearances through commercials, songs, ornaments, and decorations. But the best way to incorporate this character into your holiday season is to watch Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer! This film from the 1900’s is a classic, and has been watched by many generations. Millions of people watch this film every year to enjoy the magical elements and holiday cheer that it brings.

5) Another great movie to put you in the holiday spirit is Elf. Set in New York City, Buddy the elf travels to find his real father after being accidentally raised among Santa’s elves at the North Pole. This is definitely one of the best Christmas movies out there! It’s full of comedy, magic, and not to mention the top-tier cast! Will Ferrel does an amazing job bringing Buddy the elf to life. It’s not common that you’ll hear someone say negative things about this movie; it’s a fan favorite for sure!

4) Home Alone follows Kevin, a young boy who seems to always get into trouble. His mischievous actions find him locked in an upstairs bedroom, where he is forgotten by his family as they leave in a rush for vacation the next morning. The film follows Kevin’s adventures home alone, trying to fend for himself, and even fighting off a pair of burglars antagonizing his house. This is a great film for kids, teens, and adults alike. Everyone seems to find something to love about Home Alone. The familial elements make it a heartwarming and lovable film, and it’s a must-watch this holiday season!

3) Although there are many different adaptations of The Grinch, the best one is the original How the Grinch Stole Christmas from 1966! Inspired by the Dr. Suess story, the animated film follows one of the most popular characters of all time, The Grinch. Full of heartlessness, greed, and hatred, The Grinch tries to steal Christmas from the people of Whoville, who take Christmas very seriously in their village. This is a short film for everyone to enjoy during the holiday season. Not only is it entertaining, but it also has great morals. It’s great for younger siblings who might not be able to sit down for a full 2-hour movie, as well as busier teens/adults with not much extra time on their hands. Overall, it’s a perfect film for the Christmas season.

2) Christmas movies don’t have to be popular for them to be successful. The Flight Before Christmas, an animated film released in 2008, is not nearly as popular as the rest of the movies on this list. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not just as good (if not better!). Niko, a young reindeer trying to learn to fly, hears that his father is one of Santa’s reindeer at the North Pole. He embarks on a journey to find his father, and meets new friends as well as enemies along the way. It’s a movie filled with Christmas spirit and enchanting animation. Through the amazing music, details, and lovable characters, you’ll feel like you’re really part of it. It’s a film that isn’t recommended nearly enough; definitely give it a try!

1) Arguably the best Christmas movie of all time is It’s a Wonderful Life. If you watch one movie from this list, let it be this one! It’s a classic black-and-white film released in 1946. It follows George Bailey, a burnt-out businessman from a small town, who receives a guardian angel sent from Heaven to show him what life would be like if he had never existed. It has essential themes and morals that are important for everyone, not just adults, to understand. In addition, the story is a memorable one, full of heartwarming and inspiring characters. This movie will get you in the Christmas spirit like no other. This should be on your list every year!
