Celebrities are widely known for their influence on people, starting from trends, lifestyle, cultural influence and even public perception.
One example I can give is the biggest boy band yet, BTS. BTS is known for their music, dances, fashion, and connecting well with their fans (even the para-social one). There is no arguing that BTS has a big influence on a lot of people but one main event and one member I want to point out is Jungkook and his lemon flavored water sweetener incident.
There is this app called v-live where mainly kpop idols go to make lives for their fans, so around early March 2021 Jungkook decided to go live, to share things he liked, one mainly being an artificial water sweetener. He shared how tasty the sweetener was and how it is his go to flavor.
Not even a day after that live was posted the flavor sold out completely. Meaning none was on the market including in store and online. To make matters worse fans were even selling it online for a much higher price because of how demanding the product was.
Ever since this incident it had become an unspoken rule for idols not to show any products even if requested by fans, unless they are sponsored by a brand.
It just comes to show that while it is true that idols benefit a lot from their fans, this type of connection between fans and a celebrity isn’t one to be desired. There was even a time where a member from bts was wearing sweat pants and a hoodie to the airport but before one could even recollect any memories of that the shirt and sweat pants somehow sold out.
On a more serious note even celebrities’ public views and opinions can change the way people feel about them. Some statements could be seen as problematic causing outrage amongst fans making people turn on them, or positive making people like them more.
Overall being a celebrity means watching what you do most of the time because you are put on a very high standard as most would say.
