Board approves make-up plan

Longer days, one Friday added to calendar

BDTV

The Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township approved a plan Monday night that will add Friday, June 6 to the school calendar and increase the learning hours for six days. The plan will not change the scheduled graduation date of June 7.

While the plan still needs approval from the Indiana Board of Education, that appears to be a formality.

Monday night, the Board of Education passed a resolution for make-up days in the M.S.D. of Wayne Township.  Currently, the township is required to make up three instructional days. One will be Monday, Feb. 17 and another will be Friday, June 6. The third missed day will be made up by adding one additional hour of instruction time to the regularly scheduled school days on March 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, and 20.  For planning purposes, the attendance times during these extended days will be:

Ben Davis High School and BD Ninth Grade Center: 7:20 a.m. – 3:20 p.m.
Maplewood and Westlake Elementary Schools: 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Bridgeport, Chapelwood, North Wayne, and Rhoades Elem Schools: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Sanders School 8:40 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Chapel Glen, Garden City, McClelland, Robey, Stout Field Elementary: 8:40 a.m. – 4:40 p.m.
Ben Davis Univ, Chapel Hill, Lynhurst, and Wayne Enrichment Center: 9:15 a.m. – 5:15 p.m.

Dr. Jeff Butts used results from surveys conducted with Wayne Township staff to help formulate this plan. Graduation scheduled for June 7 for both Ben Davis and Ben Davis University will not be affected by this plan.

Afternoon preschool will be cancelled on these extended days, which will balance the instructional minutes missed by the morning preschool students due to 2-hour delays.Area 31 and Sanders students from member districts will operate on their district’s schedule.

The teacher workday will begin 15 minutes before the start of school and conclude 15 minutes after student dismissal. Teachers will make up the remaining three hours at their discretion.  If you have after-school concerns, work with your building principal to address those.

The board also addressed the issue of any additional days we may miss this winter.

For the next instructional day missed due to weather, one additional hour of instruction will be added to the regularly scheduled school day on April 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, and 24. If an additional instructional day is missed, one additional hour of instruction will be added to the regularly scheduled school day on May 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, and 22.

The last teacher day now will be Monday, June 9, 2014.

Wayne Township has missed days this school year on September 26, 2013; January 7, 8, 9, 10, 28; and February 5, 2014.
