The You Make a Difference award winner for October is special education teacher Dustin Stewart, who is in his first year at Ben Davis after teaching at the 7th and 8th grade center for two years. Stewart answers a few questions:

What do you like most about teaching special ed?

I enjoy teaching special education because they are my favorite students to be around and we have a lot of fun with each other.

Why did you choose teaching as a profession?

I chose teaching as a profession because I wanted the opportunity to make an impact on the lives of young adults.

What does winning the You Make a Difference award mean to you?

It’s an honor to have won the You Make a Difference award in my first year at BD.

What’s your favorite part about teaching?

My favorite part about teaching is getting the opportunity to work with high school students, and helping them graduate from high school and move on to a college of their choice.

What are the challenges you face as a special ed teacher?

Sometimes students lack motivation, which can cause conflicts in teaching them.
