It’s the most wonderful time of the year

No it is not Christmas, it is Record Store Day

Its+the+most+wonderful+time+of+the+year

After what seems like a million years the time has come again.

My favorite time of the year — Record Store Day is this weekend.

Record Store Day first began in 2007 as a way to bring together record store owners and music lovers to celebrate the unique culture that both of then share of music. Record Store Day is celebrated all over the world with participating stores in every continent except for Antarctica, but give it a couple of years and I’m sure we will be celebrating there too.

Indy area record stores participating in this unique event are Luna Music (5202 N College Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46220) and Indy CD & Vinyl (806 Broad Ripple Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46220). This year Luna Music will have local indie band Margot and The Nuclear So So’s doing an in-store performance at 3 p.m. Local DJs will also be spinning records up until noon and our future prom DJ Indiana Jones will be spinning all vinyl at 11 a.m.

Other live performances include:

12 p.m Sedcairn Archives

1 p.m.  Sirius Blvck

2 p.m The Icks

4 p.m. Sleeping Bag

5 p.m We Are Hex

Luna will also have their annual sidewalk sale all day where you can grab thousands of $2 vinyls and $1 CDs. And don’t forget your special grab bag which will have samplers, surprises and treats all for free.  But that is not all.

There will also be activities like magazine making with General Public Collective, loads of giveaways from the NUVO street team and Laundromatinee and if you get hungry WB Pizza will be there happy to serve you.

Luna will also have exclusive merchandise like Nat Russell t-shirts and totes and, Kyle Field t-shirts and totes.

Indy CD and Vinyl will also have performances in their outside tent.

Among the performers will be:

12 p.m. Raw McCartney

1 p.m.  The Bonesetters

2 p.m. Greg Mullen and MaryAnn

3 p.m.  No Coast

4 p.m. White Moms

6:30 p.m.  Sirivs Blvck

Inside the store local DJs will be playing the hottest tunes all day as you make your selection of their one of kind vinyls, LPs and CDs. If you get hungry or thirsty do not get wary there will be loads of food and coffee provided. Throughout the day there will be cool prizes to be given away.

Luna and Indy CD and Vinyl will have exclusive vinyls available. Pixies will be releasing  a new album 10 days before anywhere else and you can only get it on Record Store Day, along with more than 300 more titles. For a full list of titles be sure to check out www.recordstoreday.com

Both Luna and Indy CD and Vinyl will be opening early on the Saturday at 8 p.m.  so make sure to get there early so you don’t miss out on all the exclusive releases and specially priced vinyls.

Record Store Day is not just about the customers and the record store owners it is also about the community. Another huge partner in Record Store Day this year is local independent radio station WTTS.

“To celebrate, WTTS will be playing classic album sides all day Saturday (6am-9pm). Yes, entire album sides on the radio! We’ll be giving away new releases on vinyl, with one listener winning a turntable and a copy of every classic album we feature, courtesy of Indy CD & Vinyl,” WTTS program director Brad Holtz said.

WTTS will also be at Indy CD and Vinyl from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. where you can stop by and purchase the WTTS Collector’s Edition Vol. 19 CD for only $10. WTTS has been participating in Record Store Day for over five year and they do it all for the music, because that’s what the day is really about.

“Record Store Day is a true celebration of music, both new and classic. That’s really the essence of WTTS. Our audience is incredibly passionate about music and as a local, independent radio station, getting involved in a day celebrating music and local record stores just makes sense.”  Holtz said.

“It is an excellent opportunity to spend time with people in your local community and it certainly supports independent business!” said a representative of Luna Music.

Both Luna and Indy CD and Vinyl will be opening early on the Saturday at 8 a.m. so make sure you come out and enjoy Record Store Day with your friends, your dog or by yourself. This is an event you don’t want to miss.
