Zombi 2 is an English-Language Italian Zombie Film directed by the “Godfather of Gore”, or “The Poet of the Macabre”, Lucio Fulci, released on the 25th of August 1979.
It was adapted from an original screenplay written by Dardano Sacchetti to serve as a sequel to George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead, which was released in Italy under the name of Zombi.
The film was set on a Caribbean island cursed by voodoo whose dead residents rise as zombies to attack the living. A scientist’s daughter journeys to the island after her fathers boat turns up abandoned in New York.
Zombi 2 was filmed on a small budget of 410 million Italian Lira, which is equal to only around 243,000 US dollars. Zombi 2 wasn’t without any controversy though, because in its release in the UK it was counted as a “Video Nasty”, which is a term that is used to refer to low-budget exploitation or horror films, however, the film received greater appreciation years later by critics and gained a cult following.
The cast for Zombi 2 is fairly small, only having a few critical characters to the story, Tisa Farrow as Anne Bolt, Ian McCulloch as Peter West, Richard Johnson as Dr. David Menard, Al Civer as Brian Hull, Auretta Gay as Susan Barrett, and Olga Karlatos as Paola Menard. The director, Lucio Fulci also makes a cameo appearance as Peter’s new editor.
The film would go on to gross a total of 3,000,000,000 Italian Lira, far greater than the starting budget. Upon its release in the UK on January 2nd 1980, the BBFC required a total of 1 minute and 46 seconds of material to be cut in order to obtain an X rating.
Overall this is a classic horror movie, and one of the most notable movies directed by the Godfather of Gore Luico Fulci.
