Red Moon in Venus misses more than it hits

Red Moon in Venus misses more than it hits

Caitlin Merill, staff writer

For 3 years fans of singer Kali Uchis have patiently been waiting for a new album. Her last album, Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) was released in 2020.

In March of this year, she released her somewhat long-awaited album, Red Moon In Venus. An album 15 songs in length as well as 43 minutes and 14 seconds long, making it one of her shortest albums yet.

Red Moon In Venus marked the first time singer Kali Uchis has charted in the top 10 of Billboards 200 putting her at slot 4. This album also earned her the 2nd spot on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. I only started listening to Kali Uchis a little over a year ago so I’m not entirely biased but for some part, I am because I listen to her frequently now. One of the reasons I was so excited about this album was the artists that are featured on this album. Artists like Omar Apollo, Summer Walker, and Don Toliver.

 In My Garden

The first track off of this album surprised me, I actually really liked this song. Especially with how short the song is, it was a good song. My favorite part of the song would be,  “I just wanted to tell you, in case you forgot (Ooh) I love you.” I really like this song because it kind of goes to show that you should be telling people in your life that you love them. I would give this song a 8 out of 10 ranking.

I Wish You Roses

This is another one of the songs I really liked from this album. In my opinion, this song could seem like a breakup song with some of the lyrics, and normally breakup songs aren’t my favorites but I really like this one. My favorite lyric from this song would have to be, “So do not be afraid to get pricked by the thorns.” I feel like the lyrics are kind of random to be a favorite but I like it a lot. My ranking for this song is a 9 out of 10.

Worth The Wait(ft Omar Apollo)

This has to be the song I was most excited for solely for the artist featured on the song. Omar Apollo is one of my favorite singers at the moment so I was over the moon excited to listen to this song. I went into the song with high expectations which I wish I hadn’t because the song wasn’t as amazing as I thought it would be. However, the song is a good song and I would listen to it again. If I had to choose my favorite song lyric it would be,  “Gotta be careful with my heart because I love deep.” I would rank this song a 7 out of 10.

Love Between

I didn’t really care for this song the first time I listened to it but as I listened to it more, it grew on me. It’s nowhere near my favorite song on the album but it was overall a good song. If I had to pick a part of the song I liked best it would be,  “If you take away my air, how am I supposed to breathe?” I would give this song a 6 out of 10.

All Mine

In all honesty, I didn’t really care for the song, I found myself wanting to turn it off because it was somewhat boring. I thought the more often I listened to it the more it would grow on me but I was wrong. My favorite part of the song was, “Who’s the only girl that can make you cry? I wonder if it hurts how hard they try.” I would give this song a 5 out of 10 just because I struggled to get through the song

Fantasy(ft Don Toliver)

This was the feature I was least excited about out of the three on the album. I really liked Don Toliver’s part of the song but I wasn’t the biggest fan of Kali’s part. If I had to pick a part of this song I liked best it would be, “Babe, if you don’t worship me (hah-hah), it just doesn’t work for me (hah).” I would give this song a 3 out of 10

Como et Quiero Yo

I really liked this song which was good since the past few songs had not been my type of song. I liked this song so much that I had to add it to two different playlists of mine. My favorite part of this song is, “But lately, I just wanna make love, I don’t wanna fight, can we make up?” I would give this song a 9 out of 10

Hasta Cuando

This is by far my favorite song off of this album, I find it really relatable for some reason. I didn’t necessarily like the song the first time I listened to it but it had to grow on me for a bit. If I had to pick my favorite lyric it would be, “Paint me as the villain if that makes you feel better, make everyone hate me if that makes you feel better.” I would give this song a 10 out of 10.

Endlessly

I actually really liked this song surprisingly, I was expecting not to like it but I did. My favorite part of this song would have to be, “Your heart is mine, it ain’t hard to say, when you met me, you saw me for me.” I’d give this a 8 out of 10 ranking.

Moral Conscience

This would have to be my second favorite song off of the album. I really liked it. My favorite part of this song is, “I guess I was just lookin’ for the love no ones showed me in my childhood.” I would give this song a 9 out of 10 ranking.

Not Too Late

This song is without a doubt my least favorite song of the entire album. I usually don’t like songs where the title is just a color, so I wasn’t surprised when I didn’t like this song at all. If I needed to pick a favorite part of this song it would probably be, “No, I’m not your type, you can be honest.” I would give this a ranking of 2 out of 10

Blue

I didn’t really care for this song at all, it wasn’t particularly a bad song but it wasn’t a good song either, I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to this song but if it started playing I wouldn’t really care either. If I had to pick my favorite lyric from the song it would be, “‘Cause what’s the point of all the pretty things in the world, if I don’t have you.” I would give this song a 5 out of 10.

Deserve Me (Ft. Summer Walker)

This was the song I was most excited for because I love when 2 successful women do collaborations on songs and I love Summer Walker so much so I was already obsessed with this song before I even heard it. I can’t say it’s my favorite because I’ve said that about 3 songs so far but I really like this song. My favorite part of this song is definitely, “Deep down you gotta know you’re wrong, you know I never needed you.” I would give this song a 9 out of 10.

Moonlight

I don’t really have an opinion on this song, it’s kind of just there. I don’t like it or hate it. I just feel kind of indifferent about the song. My favorite lyric from the song is, “Find out how it feels to let go of everything. Be free, when you’re here with me.” I would give this song a solid 6 out of 10.

Happy Now

I actually liked this song at first but as I relistened to it I liked it slightly less. By the third time I heard the song I would have been okay to never hear it again. Picking a lyric from this song that I personally liked best was hard but I ended up deciding this part was my favorite, “Cosmic conditions conspired against us

‘Cause you and me got chemistry.” I would give this song a 4 out of 10.

Overall this album had more misses than hits, I most likely won’t ever listen to this album from the start to the end again. There were songs I liked and will listen to again but there were more songs I disliked than songs I liked. As a whole, I would give this album a 6 out of 10. The highest selling point for me was the featuring artists since I love their music.
