For the past 16 years, Taylor Swift has been releasing music and gaining popularity.

Going from her first album being country to going to pop to going to indie pop to rerecording her albums, Swift has done it all. It could be argued that Taylor Swift is one of the best songwriters of this generation.

Recently Taylor released her 10th studio album, Midnights. In just 11 days 10 of Taylor’s songs from Midnights, occupy the top ten slots on Billboard’s Top 100, making Taylor the first artist ever to do that.

I’ve been obsessed with Taylor’s music since she released 1989 in 2014 so I was over the top excited for new music. The album has 13 tracks while the 3 am version has 20. I’ll be reviewing the 13 songs on the regular album.

Lavender Haze

The first song is titled, “Lavender Haze.” Before the album even came out Taylor confirmed that the first track was about her boyfriend of 6 years, Joe Alwyn. The first time I listened to this song I didn’t really like it but as I relistened to it the song kind of grows on me. The song mentions people assuming things about Taylor and Joe’s relationship for example Taylor’s fans believe she and Joe are secretly married. She addresses this in this song with the line, “All they keep asking me is if I’m gonna be your bride, the only kind of girl they see is a one night or a wife.”  That would definitely have to be my favorite part of the song. I give this song an 8/10

Maroon

The second track is called, “Maroon.” This song is a pretty good song, the lyrics are catchy and I found myself singing along to it the second time I listened to it. I give it a solid 7/10. My favorite part is, “How the h*ll did we lose sight of us again? Sobbin’ with your head in your hands. Ain’t that the way sh*t always ends?” The song seems like a perfect breakup song to me.

Anti Hero

The third track was the track that got the very first music video of the album. The music video was probably one of my least favorite of all of Taylor’s music videos but overall the song was a good song. The lyrics got a bit repetitive which normally would be something I wouldn’t like but in this scenario, I didn’t mind it. I give it a 9.5/10. I think my favorite part is, “When my depression works the graveyard shift, all of the people I’ve ghosted stand there in the room.”

Snow on the Beach

I love this song, I was disappointed by how little Lana del Rey sang but overall it was a good song. I loved the Janet Jackson mention. The song kind of gives me the vibe of the first snow of the year, calming. Despite all of Lana Del Rey’s fans being disappointed in how little Lana had on the song I actually thought it was the perfect amount of Lana because after all, it is Taylor’s album, not Lana’s. I give it a 10/10. My favorite part is, “I can’t speak, afraid to jinx it

I don’t even dare to wish it, but your eyes are flying saucers from another planet. Now I’m all for you like Janet.”

You’re on Your Own Kid

This song by far is the grown-up version of her old song, “Never Grow Up.” It’s probably one of the most relatable songs on the album at least for me. It kind of gives off the vibes of a high school senior reliving their high school experience before graduation. I think it’s a pretty good song overall. I give it a 9/10. I like this part, “From sprinkler splashes to fireplace ashes. I gave my blood, sweat, and tears for this. I hosted parties and starved my body. Like I’d be saved by a perfect kiss.” It kinda shows how when in the spotlight of social media people think just because you’re in a happy relationship that your life is perfect.

Midnight Rain

I give it a 10/10. My favorite part is, “He wanted it comfortable, I wanted that pain.” I feel like this song gives off the vibe of high school sweethearts breaking up because the girlfriend wants more with her life and eventually ends up regretting ending the relationship later on. This is probably my second favorite song on the album.

Question…?

I give it an 8/10. My favorite lyric from this song is, “Did you ever have someone kiss you in a crowded room and every single one of your friends was making fun of you? But 15 seconds later they were clapping too?” It kind of gives me the vibe of like a new couple learning more about each other and their past relationships.

Vigilante S***

This one is probably one of the top three songs on the album. The lyrics are really good. I enjoyed listening to this song I added it to a few of my playlists, I liked the song so much. One of the lyrics I find really relatable is, “Don’t get sad, get even.” I overall liked this song I’d give it a 9/10.

Bejeweled

I’ll be honest this is my favorite song of the entire album. It makes me want to dance and I’m a horrible dancer so that’s saying a lot. The lyrics remind me of Taylor’s song from a few albums back, called ‘Mirrorball’ Bejeweled gives off the same vibes as Mirrorball. I’m obsessed with the lyric, “Putting someone first only works when you’re in their top five.” I just really love the lyrics. It holds no meaning to me but it’s such a good lyric. I give it a 10/10

Labyrinth

I’m not a huge fan of this song but it’s overall a good song it’s just not my personal favorite.  My favorite part of the song is probably, “I thought the plane was going down, how’d you turn it right around.” It’s a cute little lyric for a song I don’t like too much. I’d have to give it a 7/10

Karma

I’ll admit I’ve seen TikTok’s saying the lyrics were a bit silly and I’d have to agree but it’s catchy. It kind of sounds like it should be in a horror or crime movie sort of. I give it a 5/10. My favorite lyric is probably, “Karma’s on your scent like a bounty hunter. Karma’s gonna track you down. Step by step from town to town.” It’s pretty catchy.

Sweet Nothing

I give it a 7/10. My favorite part is, “And the voices that implore, ‘You should be doing more.” I like the song but it’s definitely not my favorite or a song I’d listen to in my free time again.

Mastermind

I give this song a 9/10. My favorite lyrics are probably, “No one wanted to play with me as a little kid. So I’ve been scheming like a criminal ever since to make them love me and make it seem effortless.” I personally find this extremely relatable to me although it’s a hit or miss with anyone else.

As a whole, I would give this album a 9/10. It wasn’t the best album she’s done but it also wasn’t the worst. I think with this album she finally had the chance to grow and write and produce the music she truly wanted to, rather than release music that was expected of her.
