Colts should be a contender

Colts should be a contender

After many delays, restrictions and cancellations, the NFL is finally in full swing.

The defending champ Kansas City Chiefs, standout NFC contender San Francisco 49ers, as well as our own Super Bowl hopeful Indianapolis Colts are all now fully padded and practicing. The Chiefs kicked off the season last night with a 34-20 win over Houston. The NFL is back.

The Colts faithful from what I’ve seen and heard are a little split this year. Some are full believers in new starting quarterback Phillip Rivers, while others are a little bit skeptical about the new sheriff in town.

In the 2019 season Rivers threw 390 completions on 591 attempts, posting a completion percentage of 65.99%. He totaled 4,615 passing yards with 23 touchdowns passes, but threw an unsettling 20 interceptions. The interception total is concerning for any and all Colts fans, however the Colts’ offensive line is exponentially better than the Chargers’ (Phillip Rivers’ former team).

With Rivers now having protection many fans are expecting a jump in stats from 2019 to 2020. As for the defensive side of the ball, everyone expects big things.

With Malik Hooker returning, and Darius Leonard poised for another huge season, the Colts defense looked ready for a jump to being among leagues the best. With things like suspensions, injuries and trades all being weekly occurrences in the NFL only time will tell how this Colts team will do this year.

Last year they finished the season with a record of 7-9, coming 3rd place in the AFC South, and missing the playoffs. As for this year, I predict the teams ceiling will be 11-5, and their floor 6-10. I predict the team MVP will be Darius Leonard, and the breakout star will be Kemoko Turay.

It’s gonna be tough contending with the AFC juggernauts, the Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens, and with teams the Pittsburgh Steelers running into the season full speed. It will definitely be a trying season and close playoff race for the Indianapolis Colts.
