Turner finishes ninth for Franklin College

Week ending April 21

MENS GOLF

 Franklin placed fifth of 17 at the Defiance Spring Invitational, and the Grizzlies’ Robert Turner placed ninth of 101 individuals with scores of 77-70-147.

SOFTBALL

Eastern Illinois (29-14) lost twice to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Jacksonville State and split a doubleheader with Tennessee Tech.  Kayla Bear had eight singles and two doubles, five runs scored, and two stolen bases in three attempts  in 23 at bats (10 for 23), and she is batting .331 (50 for 151).

MENS TENNIS

Marian lost 6-3 to Indiana Tech and won 6-3 against IU-Southeast. Ian Deiters lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and 8-6 at No. 1 doubles against Tech  and won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and lost 8-3 at No. 2 doubles against Southeast.

Trine lost 7-2 to Hope and defeated Olivet 8-1. Bryce Hernly won 4-6, 7-6, 10 at No. 6 singles and lost 8-1 at No. 3 doubles against Hope; and won 6-1, 6-1 and 8-0 against Olivet.

Ohio Wesleyan defeated Wooster 8-1 and lost 6-3 to Case-Western Reserve and 5-4 to New York University. Playing No. 3 doubles, Jacob Volbers  won 8-5 against Wooster, lost 8-1 to Case-Western Reserve, and won 8-4 against NYU.

Manchester’s Garrett Bear lost 6-0, 6-1 at  No. 6 singles and 8-1 at No. 3 doubles in a 7-2 loss to Hanover.

BASEBALL

Marian (17-22) split doubleheaders with Goshen and St. Francis. Cody Turpen pinch ran in three of the games and scored a run each time.

WOMENS OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

 Ball State’s Maritza Rodriguez placed fourth of 15 in the second tier 5000  (17:33.31) at the Jesse Owens Classic at Ohio State. 15 other women ran in the 800 Open/Showcase and had better times

Iowa’s Kyara Avant placed 21st of 25 in the 100 meter dash (12:08) and 21st of 47 in the 200 meters (24.56) at the Mount SAC Relays in San Antonio. There were additional special invitation races in both the 100 and 200 as well.

Southern Indiana’s Ralen Campbell placed third of 21 in the long jump (16-3) at the Bellarmine Classic.

Arizona State’s Alethia Marerro, competing at the Mount SAC Relays in San Antonio in a special 800 meters race that included a field of  NCAA champions and All Americans, finished seventh  of 15 (2:04.55). 46 other women competed in the regular 800.

MENS OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

 Franklin’s Nate Adams placed second of 25 in the hammer throw (171-3 ½) at the Rose-Hulman Twilight Meet.

Marian’s Aaron Murray placed 40th of 70 in the 400 meters (50.28)  at the Duke University Invitational.

Competing at the Indiana Small School Championships at Indiana Wesleyan, Indianapolis’ Jordan Boyd finished sixth of 32 in the hammer event (172 feet, ½ inch), seventh of 33 in the discus (136-9), and 27th of 29 in the shot put, where he passed on each opportunity after his first try (32-12). Teammate DeAndre Bluitt was first of seven in the triple jump (42-10) and second of 11 in the high jump (6 -6). Indiana Tech’s Maurice Macklin was 11th of 23 in the 800 meters (2:00.52).
