Giants ready for rematch with Warren

Two MIC powerhouses face each other for third time Saturday at Southport

There is an old saying in basketball that it is hard to beat a team three times in the same season.

For fans of Ben Davis basketball, that is the belief as the No. 8 rated Giants prepare to face undefeated and No. 1 Warren Central in the second game of Saturday’s Class 4A regional at Southport. Mount Vernon and Terre Haute South — both teams are unranked — start things off at 10 a.m. Saturday followed by the rematch of MIC rivals at approximately noon. The championship game is at 8 p.m.

Warren Central has beaten Ben Davis twice this season and has four straight wins in the series. The Warriors beat Ben Davis 47-39 in the regular season matchup in December at Warren and then handed the Giants a 55-43 loss in the championship game of the Marion County tournament in January, a game that was played at Southport. The last time Ben Davis won in this series was a 55-43 score in the semifinals of the 2015 Marion County tourney.

The Giants are defending Class 4A state champions and post a 21-5 record. Warren Central is 28-0 and features a balanced attack led by junior guard David Bell. The Warriors have climbed to No. 14 in the national ranking.

Ben Davis is led by 6-foot-5 senior Aaron Henry, a Michigan State recruit, and 6-foot-7 junior center Dawand Jones.
