MEN’S BASKETBALL

Illinois State (28-6) defeated UC-Irvine 85-71 in the first round of the NIT and will play Central Florida. Tony Wills had five points (2 for 6, 1 for 5, 0 for 0), three rebounds, four assists, one blocked shot, and one turnover in 33 minutes for Illinois State.

Northern Kentucky (24-11) lost 79-70 to Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Brennan Gillisplayed four minutes for NKU and had one rebound and one turnover, and missed his only shot from the field.

Vermont (29-6) lost 80-70 to Purdue in its first NCAA tournament game. Vermont’s Harry ”Dre” Wills had four points (2 for 3, 0 for 0, 0 for 2), five rebounds, two assists, and one turnover in 27 minutes.

MEN’S TRACK AND FIELD

DePauw’s Demarco Henry finished second of 23 in the discus competition with a toss of 143 feet at the Rose-Hulman Early Bird Invitational. Franklin’s Nate Adamswas 16th of 24 in the shot put (36-8 ½) and fifth of 16 in the hammer throw (141-11).

MEN’S TENNIS

Playing in Orlando, Florida, Ohio Wesleyan defeated McMurray 7-2, Scranton 5-4, Cornell of Iowa 7-2, and Illinois Wesleyan 9-0 before losing 8-1 to Mobile. Jacob Volbers won four matches at No. 2 doubles, defeating McMurray 8-2, Scranton 8-2, Cornell 8-6, and Illinois Wesleyan 8-0. He did not play in the loss to Mobile.

SOFTBALL

Eastern Illinois (14-14) defeated Eastern Michigan 4-2, lost 3-1 to Mercer, won 6-1 against Savannah State, and lost 7-4 to Mercer. Kayla Bear was 4 for 13 at the plate, with one home run, one RBI, three runs scored, and three stolen bases in the four games. She is batting .344 (33 for96).
