Boys track wins 10th straight sectional championship
The Ben Davis trackmen place first with 191 points at sectionals
The Ben Davis boys track team won their 10th sectional championship in a row last night, scoring 191 points on their way to victory, with Pike finishing 2nd with 144 points. The Giants won eight of the 16 events and took runner up in six others.
Event champions include senior Chris Evans, winning the high hurdles with a school record time and also winning the 300 hurdles. Senior Christian Powell won the long jump and the 200 meters, junior Pompey Coleman won the discus, senior Jalil Brewer won the shot put and junior Jamiu Lawal captured the pole vault title. The 4 by 100 relay team of Chris Evans, Julian Ladd, Josiah Edwards and Christian Powell also claimed victory.
The 4×800 relay team of senior Noah Pumphrey, freshman Jesse Vargas, senior Romeo Barrientos, and senior Trace Perez took runner up with almost a 10 second improvement on the season’s best time. The 4×400 relay team of freshman Maurice Higgins, senior Travon Smith, senior Ray White and junior Noah Thomas also ran to a runner up finish, earning Elite Fleet honors and clocking a three second improvement to their season’s best.
Other runner up finishes include Powell in the 100m, Evans in the long jump, and Higgins in the 400m. Senior Jordan Wilkerson was sectional runner up in the high jump and took 3rd in the 400m. Also advancing to the regionals was senior Harrison Goss (3rd) in the high jump, sophomore Johnny Adams (3rd) in the 100m, and sophomore vaulter Jalen Simmons (3rd).
Other regional qualifiers include senior Tevin Smith in the 110HH, senior Michael Taylor in the 300 hurdles, junior Isaiah Campbell in the shot put, senior Tanner Lawson in the discus, sophomore Jalen Rice in the 3200m run, junior Julian Ladd in the 200m dash and senior Josiah Edwards in the high jump.
Regionals are next Thursday at North Central. Admission is seven dollars and the top three regional finishers in each event advance to state.
