The month of February is a special month – its Black History Month.
Black History Month is not just a random tradition or something that the school put on the calendar, it actually has an interesting background.
It all goes back to a guy named Carter G.Woodson people – called him the father of black history month.and all for good reason. He noticed that Black achievements were being left out of history books to fix this he started “Negro History week”He chose the second week of February because of Abraham lincoln and Fredrick Douglas’s birthdays.
By the late 1960s college students started to push for the week to become a full month. They wanted more time to celebrate the culture and deep history in the black community. In 1976 President Gerald Ford made it official telling everybody to use this month to honor the neglected achievements of Black people.
This year is actually a huge milestone. It’s the 100th anniversary of the first week Woodson started in 1926. It’s been a full century since we started recognizing and celebrating the things black people accomplished without it being known.
