It’s time to plan your summer fun

Danielle Shumar

With summer quickly approaching, there is lots of excitement about finally getting a break.

Having a few months off to recuperate from the long school year is just around the corner. For most people, this is a time to celebrate and count down the days until the school year is over. We’re only a few weeks away from sleeping in, getting outside, and having free time to do whatever it is we want to do. However, the question could be what do we really want to do with all our free time? Lots of students pack their summers, but others leave it open. So what are some things that people like to do over the summer?

  1. Make a summer bucket list! If you know there are lots of things you want to accomplish this summer, write down a bucket list for yourself. This way, you can keep all of your summer break plans in check throughout the months.
  2. Some people use summer as a chance to save up as much money as possible. Getting a job or extending availability at an already established job will allow students to make more money than they would be during the school year.
  3. Lots of people use summer to hang out with friends every single day. While some people use summer as a chance to recharge, lots of people seem to be out every day. If this is you, consistently make plans! Hanging out with friends and family is one of the best aspects of summer because students finally have time to do things outside of school.
  4. Travel! If you have the opportunity to go somewhere fun, take it! Traveling is a fun part of summer for many people. Whether you’re going somewhere tropical, or escaping the summer heat to go somewhere colder, a summer vacation is always a good idea. Traveling will give you something to look forward to during the summer.
  5. If you find yourself getting bored during your free time, start a new hobby! Find something that you think might be interesting for you. For example, baking, reading, crocheting, etc. are all common examples of simple hobbies to keep yourself entertained. Something that is fun to you will help keep you from getting bored during days where you might be doing nothing.
  6. If you have your license or a friend who does, going on drives is a great summer activity. Simply opening the windows and turning up the music can instantly boost your mood. Being able to feel the warm summer breeze through the windows is something that doesn’t last long enough in Indiana.
  7. Have a bonfire or grill! Gather some friends, turn on the fire, and roast some marshmallows for an easy, fun summer activity. This is something fun to do on late nights when the weather is especially nice. Another option is turning on the grill and hosting a cookout. This is something that screams summer, especially towards the time around Fourth of July.
  8. If you want something water related to do, find the nearest lake or pool! Indiana has some gorgeous lakes including Lake Monroe, Patoka Lake, and Tippecanoe Lake. These are popular spots for a reason.

Summer is a time to do whatever it is you want. Think about what would make your summer the absolute best, and do it. Without school, there is plenty of time to get outside, see friends and family, and take some time for yourself. Summer is fast approaching with only a few weeks left in the school year, so now is the perfect time to start planning.
