February is an important and special month because of many celebrations and historical dates.
Some historic dates include February 5, 1917, when the new constitution of Mexico, allowed sweeping social changes, was adopted. On February 6, 1788 Massachusetts became the sixth state to become part of the U.S. Constitution and on February 6, 1933, was when the 20th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was adopted.
The 20th amendment is important for us seniors especially because it leads right into an important decision for the future of our country. On February 6, the United States Constitution moved the beginning and ending terms of the president and vice president from March 4 to January 20, and of members of Congress from March 4 to January 3. This is important because we are very close to the next elections where us seniors will be able to vote.
Some more important and interesting things about February are that it’s Heart Health Awareness Month. This month was made to spread awareness of heart problems throughout the country and to motivate Americans to have a healthy lifestyle to prevent these problems. So on the first Friday of February, wear red to support the awareness.
A day that’s fun in February is Groundhog Day. In case some forgot exactly what that day is, it’s when a groundhog comes from its burrow and sees its shadow, it will retreat and winter will go on for six more weeks, if it does not see its shadow, spring will arrive early.
Fun fact about this day is that it began as a Pennsylvania German custom in Pennsylvania a couple centuries ago. Its origins in ancient European weather lore, where a badger or sacred bear is the teller of the seasons.
A science fact about February is on the 12th of the month it is Darwin Day. Darwin Day is a celebration to commemorate the birthday of Charles Darwin on 12 February 1809.
Darwin was a geologist/biologist, and was known for his contributions to evolutionary biology. Evolutionary biology is a concept that many believed how species nowadays became who they are. For example, many of us believed to have started as apes and eventually became humans eventually through evolution. His idea that all species of life have come from a common ancestor is now considered the basic concept in science. Last thing is don’t forget to show some love on February 14th, Valentines Day. It originated from Christians honoring a martyr named Valentine. It has also become a significant cultural and religious celebration of romance and love all over the world. Don’t just do so only on this day but everyday as it can only spread positivity all around you.
