Until Dawn is a 2025 survival horror film derived from the 2015 game of the same name. Hhowever, it’s far more different than the game, only taking place in the same universe while featuring a stand alone story that expands on the games mythology.
The film was directed by David F. Sandberg, and written by Gary Dauberman and Blair Butler. It stars Ella Rubin, Michael Cimono, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, and Belmont Cameli as a group of friends who end up in a secluded area embedded with a time loop where dying restarts the night and after every death there is a new threat, and the only solution to escaping is to survive until morning.
Peter Stormare also stars in the movie, reprising his role from the game.
In January 2024, Sony Pictures announced the film’s development with Screen Gems and Playstation Productions set to produce. Casting announcements were announced throughout 2024 and principal photography took place between August and October in Budapest.
Until Dawn was released in the United States by Sony Pictures Releasing on April 25, 2025 and received mixed reviews from critics and grossed over $53.6 million worldwide.
Overall, I think the movie was great and it had amazing special effects, but it barely had any connections to the game except the concept and the character Stormare plays, and until the end where we see after-credits scenes where they showed camera footage of a snowy log cabin from the game.
