Running out of interesting movies to watch? Look no further.
“Nonnas” directed by Stephen Chbosky is an amazing movie that explores many themes. It’s a love story, comedy, and drama all in one.
This movie is about a little kid named Joey who grows up taking care of his mother and grandma, better known as Nonna. Unfortunately, his nonna and mother pass away. After these deaths, he impulsively opens a restaurant and names it, “Enoteca Maria” after his mother.
His one desire was to make his restaurant feel like family so he had nonnas from all over the world to be his chefs. His restaurant ends up being a success.
One thing about this movie that I enjoyed was the destigmatization of aging. Aging is often a negative thing in society. In this movie, the women build themselves up, forming an empowerful family of their own.
“Age is not a disease, Roberta.” Joey said.
This is such a powerful quote to me because getting old doesn’t mean the fun has to stop. You can still be fun and imaginative as you age. Aging is a beautiful thing.
“Don’t let old hurts get in the way of a happy new beginning,” Antonella said.
I really liked this quote. We are all allowed to be cautious after getting hurt but we can’t stay that way forever. We’ll never know or experience great things, if we let every old hurt stop us from living.
An interesting thing I found was that Enoteca Maria is an actual restaurant with nonnas as chefs in Staten Island. This movie was quite the tearjerker for me. I definitely would recommend this movie to people. This movie is a ‘25 Emmy Nominee. If you’re ever looking for a movie to watch, give “Nonnas” a watch. It’s on Netflix.
