Companion is a 2025 science fiction thriller film Directed and written by Drew Hancock.
The cast is fairly small, with Sophie Thatcher as Iris, Jack Quaid as Josh, Lukas Gage as Patrick, Megan Suri as Kat, Harvey Guillen as Eli, Rupert Friend as Sergey, Jaboukie Young-White as Teddy, Matthew J. McCarthy as Sid, and Marc Menchaca as Deputy Hendrix.
Companion was released in the United States by Warner Bros. Pictures on January 31, 2025. The film received positive reviews from critics and has grossed $36.7 million against a budget of $10 million.
The plot begins with a young woman named Iris, who recalls the memory of meeting her boyfriend Josh for the first time. Later, they travel to a isolated lakehouse to meet with friends Kat, the couple Eli and Patrick, and Sergey, Kats boyfriend and the owner of the lakehouse.
The next day, Sergey attempts to sexually assault Iris at the lake and Iris kills him by stabbing him in the neck as he gets on top of her in self defense with a knife that she had on her.
Blood-soaked and panicked, Iris returns to the house in attempt to explain what happened, in response, Josh tells her “Iris, go to sleep” shutting her down. When she wakes up, Josh informs her that she is a companion robot he is renting from a robotics company named Empathix, and her emotions and intelligence can be controlled by an app on Josh’s phone, and she doesn’t take that so well.
In February 2023, it was reported that Companion was in the works from New Line Cinema with a scripts from Drew Hancock, who was also set to direct, Zach Cregger, Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, and Roy Lee set to produce.
Cregger originally planned to direct but Hancock took over. In May of 2023, Jack Quaid joined the cast as Josh, and in June the rest of the cast was added. Principle photography for Companion took place in the New York counties of Dutchess and Putnam, including Garrison (the lakehouse), Fishkill (the opening sequence), Beacon and the Putnam Valley.
Filming was completed in January 2024. The score for the film was created and composed by Hrishikesh Hirway. Overall I think the movie was great, a somewhat original plot and it had some great plot-twists.
