Giants head to regionals

For the second straight year, the Ben Davis Giants are sectional football champions.

This year’s title came via a 41-6 win at Perry Meridian Friday that sets up a rematch against conference rival Carmel this Friday night at Ben Davis. The Greyhounds won the regular season game with Ben Davis 31-9 in a contest played at Carmel.

The two MIC schools join conference rivals Center Grove and Warren Central in the Class 6A southern semistate hunt. Warren travels to Center Gove this Friday with the winner facing the Ben Davis-Carmel winner in the southern semistate game the following week.

Ben Davis used a balanced attack in beating Perry Meridian Friday. Junior quarterback J’uan Swanson threw for 152 yards and two touchdowns and the rushing attack accounted for 235 yards and two touchdowns.

The sectional championship was the 24th overall for the Giants. Carmel is the state leader with 32 sectional championships. Carmel and Ben Davis are tied with 23 wins each in the overall series history and are 2-2 in state tournament games.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Lady Giants began the season by splitting two games at Center Gove Saturday. Ben Davis beat No. 2 Fishers 71-62 in the first game behind 16 points from Natalie Howard. The Lady Giants then lost 47-30 to Hamilton Southeastern in the second game.

Ben Davis hosts Brownsburg in the Lady Giants home opener this Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
