Veteran basketball coach Stan Benge has seen a lot in his time on the Ben Davis bench. That’s why the second all-time winningest girls coach in state history isn’t that upset with his squads 0-2 start.
“Every team is different,” Benge said. “This team has some growing to do but could be very good, even great by the end of this season.”
The girls start one freshman and only have five seniors on the varsity roster. They opened the season with two double-digit losses to Fishers and Hamilton Southeastern. The girls travel to Brownsburg Saturday before hosting Plainfield on Tuesday.
Despite the slow start, Benge and his players are excited about the season.
“My team goals are for us to play as one, and become more hooked up on defense specifically, and to win a sectional title,” senior Mackenzie Martin said. “I see our team becoming a better all around team and winning a sectional title by communicating with each other more.”
That’s music to Benge’s ears.
“We just need to continue to practice hard and get better day by day,” Benge said.
