Dance shines as Marian bows out of tourney

Marian (5-2), playing in the first round of the NAIA National Championships, lost 40-29 to Reinhardt University, Georgia. Outside linebacker Sir’ Zion Dance led the Knights with nine tackles, four unassisted. Teammate Trent Gipson returned three kickoffs for a total of 69 yards.

WOMENS BASKETBALL

In junior college regional games played the previous week, Hutchinson Community College defeated Cowley 84-64 before being eliminated by Independence 75-56. Cherrelle Newsom had six points (2 for 4, 2 for 3, 0 for 0), one rebound, three assists, one steal, and three turnovers in 17 minutes against Cowley; and one missed shot in two minutes against Independence.

MENS GOLF

Franklin placed fourth of 10 teams in a tournament composed of Heartland Conference teams. Robert Turner was fifth for Franklin and 33rd of 62 overall with scores of 78-78-156.

BASEBALL

Central Methodist (33-4) won twice against William Penn (Iowa), once against Columbia College (Missouri), and twice against Benedictine (Kansas). Isaiah Davis relieved the starter in the Columbia game with CMU trailing 3-0. He pitched to 15 batters over 4 1/3 innings and retired 13 of them, giving up one hit, one walk, and no runs while striking out three. CMU came back to win the game 5-4, and Davis picked up his first win. He is now 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA. The senior pinch ran in the two games with Benedictine.

Logan Butrum was the starting pitcher for Wabash (16-12) in an 11-6 defeat of DePauw; and he gave up three hits, two walks, and three runs in one complete  inning. Wabash has won six of its last seven games.

WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

Competing for Purdue in the Husker Big Ten Invitational, held in Texas, Simi Akinrinsola placed 17th of 19 in the shot put (42.00) and 19th of 22 in the hammer (148.69).

Indianapolis placed second of 15 teams (Indiana Tech won) at the Little State Championships. The Greyhounds’ Mariah Judy was 12th of 30 in the 1500 (5:02.44); and teammate Sheniya Brown was a member of the fifth place 4 X 100 relay team (50.59).

MENS OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

 Participating in the Gibson Invitational at Indiana State, Purdue-Fort Wayne’s Dana Fagnon was 10th of 16 in the 110 hurdles (15.56), 24th of 36 in the 200 meter dash (22.80), and a member of the winning 4 X 100 meter relay team (43.08). ISU’s Mike Adams was 14th of 23 in the 100 dash (11.18) and 21st of 36 in the 200 (22.66).

Trine, Wabash, and Rose-Hulman competed at the DePauw Quad. Trine’s Zach Brickler placed 13th of 21 in the 1500 (4:17.51). Rose-Hulman’s Tyler Speitel was eighth of 21 in the 800 (2:02.88), and Wabash’s Isaiah Campbell was second of 19 in the discus (143.00) and sixth of 15 in the hammer (140.03).

Grace’s Maurice Macklin placed fifth of 42 in the 800 (1:55.71) at the Little State Championships at Indiana Wesleyan. Vincennes Jahod Fair was eighth of 15 in the 110 hurdles (16.29) and fifth of 17 in the 400 hurdles (56.82).
