Area 31 teacher Danny Camden, who works in the automotive technology department, was recently named the Career Center’s Teacher of the Year. He will join Ben Davis English teacher Katrina Dawson as a candidate for the Wayne Township Secondary Education teacher of the year.
To commemorate this momentous title, Camden answered some questions about his career:
How long have you been working at Ben Davis? Did you have any teaching jobs or notable professions before your current position?
“I’ve been at Ben Davis for 15 years. Before that, I taught at Lincoln College of Technology. Prior to teaching, I worked at Dugan Chevrolet for 14 years, where I became a GM world-class automotive technician and ASE master technician.”
How has working at Ben Davis shaped your life?
“I have been blessed with numerous opportunities for personal growth by being given the opportunity for awesome professional development through the Association for Career and Technical Education.”
Do you have any notable stories from your time as a teacher at Ben Davis?
“That’s kind of hard to answer. I have had many students come through our program that I have seen become really great technicians and raise families, as well as change their entire trajectory in life.”
What do you want to be remembered for?
“Building the best Automotive Technology program in the state.”
What is your favorite part of working at our school, and why?
“Seeing my kids go on to be awesome in their lives because of my class.”
What was your reaction to being named the Career Center’s teacher of the year?
“I was honored. I am really surprised because I am only doing what I feel is necessary to help make better, more successful students and a better future for my industry.”
Do you have any advice for current BD students?
“Look farther into your future than the end of your nose. Never be satisfied and always try to be better. Because at the end of the day, that’s what makes you a valuable employee.”
