Undefeated Giants head to regionals

It’s a regional rematch against Cathedral

staff report

The Ben Davis senior boys basketball players have never lost a sectional game. They completed that task Saturday night with a 80-59 win over Pike in the championship game of the Class 4A Sectional 11 at Perry Meridian.

That win sets up a regional rematch this Saturday at 4 p.m. at Southport against defending 4A state champion Cathedral. The last time Ben Davis lost was in the regional championship last year 72-57 to Cathedral, also at Southport.

Since that lost to Cathedral last year the Giants have gone 29-0, including a 62-50 win over Cathedral on Dec. 10 in the Tipoff Classic at Southport. These two teams are familiar with each other.

Saturday’s game is the second regional game at Southport. Brownsburg plays New Palestine in the 1 p.m. opener followed by No. 1 Ben Davis against No. 3 Cathedral. After Saturday’s regional games, the IHSAA will redraw the semistate round with the pairings announced Sunday.

Seniors Zane Doughty and Sheridan Sharp each dressed for sectionals as freshman and played in the final seconds of a loss to Southport. Since then, this senior class has gone 8-0 in sectional games.
