The Ben Davis football team has a chance to capture its 12th Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference championship and first since 2019 when the Giants travel to North Central Friday night.

The championship run was made possible by an improbable 29-28 comeback win at home last weekend against Lawrence Central. The Giants trailed 28-0 after LC returned the second half kickoff for a touchdown. Ben Davis then scored 29 straight points — its largest comeback win ever — and won when senior Lincoln Murff converted a two-point conversion run with seven seconds left.

If Ben Davis gets past North Central Friday night, the Giants claim the outright conference championship. Ben Davis is 5-3 overall and 4-0 in the conference while North Central is seeking its first win of the season. Lawrence Central finished 4-1 in the conference. After Friday’s game, the Giants have a week off before facing Class 6A No. 1 Brownsburg in the first game of the sectional October 28.

In other fall sports, the volleyball team lost 3-2 in the opening round of sectionals Tuesday night. That leaves the boys cross country team as the only other fall sport beside football still in action. The boys finished third in their own sectional last weekend and host regional action this Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m.
