Giants head to Lucas for state championship

BD renews old rivalry with Penn with 2017 state on the line

For the second time in four years, the Ben Davis Giants football team will be playing for a state championship on Thanksgiving weekend.

The Giants advanced to the Class 6A state championship game with a convincing 57-2o win over Avon Friday night in front of an appreciative crowd at Giants Stadium. Ben Davis will play Penn at 7:05 p.m. this Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium. The Giants won the 2014 state title with a 42-24 win over Carmel.

Ben Davis owns a 13-4 series lead over Penn and is 2-1 against them in state title games. The last time the two schools played was in 2010 with Ben Davis winning 14-10. The first time the the schools played was a 38-14 state title win for the Giants in 1991, the year Ben Davis was declared National Champions.

Penn beat Ben Davis for the state title in 1996 by a score of 17-14 and the two teams played again for state in 1998 with Ben Davis winning 27-3.

Ben Davis is 13-0 and has been rated No. 1 in Class 6A all season while Penn is 12-1 and is riding a 12-game win streak. The Kingsmen are No. 5 in the state
