Have you ever been interested in rugby? Now’s your chance. Coaches Matthew Long and Aaron Poland are looking for students that are interested in playing.
They’re starting a new girls rugby team and trying to restore the former powerhouse the rugby team was here.
For those who don’t know what rugby is, rugby is really similar to American football, in fact actually coming before it. It’s to believe it started in England in 1823 when soccer players picked up the ball and the others tried to tattle them.
Similar to other sports their objective is to get points in their opponents goal area. During the fall there are seven players, in which three are forwards and four are backs. There’s only four games during the fall season; each game lasts around 14 minutes. Games are in late September and early October, fall being a great way for students to get introduced to the sport. While in the spring there’s 15 players, eight forwards and seven backs. There’s 10 games during the spring season and each game is around an hour long. Season starts in March and games in April, games are normally on Saturdays and some Wednesdays.
If you have any other experiences with any sports they can and will come in handy here. Don’t worry about not having any knowledge about rugby or any other sports you will learn along the way.
If you’re worried about not being a certain size type for rugby don’t worry there’s plenty of different positions all for.
“One of the primary goal of rugby is to have fun,” coach Long said, “Rugby is also probably the most inclusive sport out there, if you are reading this, YOU will be welcomed with open arms. Rugby is for the outcasts, Rugby is for the rejected.”
Both Coach Long and Coach Poland are excited for this new era of rugby here at Ben Davis. If you’re interested or want any more information text RUGBY to 317-507-4891.
