Former BD star nominated for top award
2006 grad up for top female soccer player
Former Ben Davis soccer standout Lauren (Cheney) Holiday was recently nominated to be named the best in her profession.
Holiday, a 2006 Ben Davis graduate, is a two-time Olympic champion in women’s soccer. She currently plays for FC Kansas City in the National Women’s Professional Soccer League.
Holiday was one of six players nominated Tuesday of this week for U.S. Soccer’s female athlete of the year. Abby Wambach, a five-time winner of the award, was also nominated along with forward Alex Morgan, midfielder Carli Lloyd, forward Sydney Leroux and forward Christen Press.
Holiday was chosen the National Women’s Soccer League most valuable player this season after helping FC Kansas City to a first-place tie in the regular-season standings. She led the league with 12 goals and nine assists in its inaugural season.
For the national team, Holiday scored three goals in 2013 and shared the team lead with six assists.
Fans can vote for the winner of the award on the U.S. Soccer website. The fan vote will equal 50 percent of the final ballot, while the remaining half will be decided by news media and U.S. Soccer representatives.
