The Indianapolis Speedrome – sometimes called the Kitley Speedrome – is a place to take your family to have fun, watch races, and make memories.
The racing season starts March 29 and runs through September 20. Throughout many months of racing, there are many events like the school bus races or the trailer races, bike races for kids, and remembrance races.
And then we have autograph night and fireworks for the fourth of July. But the thing that everyone waits for is the “3-hour figure 8 race.”
This is a race where drivers enter town just to race the biggest race of the year at Kitley. The seats are full and so is the track. But other than all the fun events that you get to go to year-round, families have been going since 1941 when Kitley opened and many generations of families go and race and just make memories.
I have been going to Kitley since I can remember because my great grandpa raced and my grandpa and his brother and my uncle have all raced there and they still do so it’s a tradition for us to go kinda like an every weekend thing.
This year my grandpa and uncle will be racing what we call street stock. And since I could I raced what we called the bike races where kids bring their bikes and race around the track.
When my cousin and I raced we always got first and second every time, and whether or not you won you got a trophy.
For any of the cars, you have to rent a pit spot and pay to race but in some races, you can win money.
But for many it’s not about the money it’s about the joy of racing and having fun. Not all the time it’s fun because like every race there are wrecks and people get mad but that’s a part of racing. There are three types of people – “handle it on the track,” “Handle it in the pits” and then we have the “I’ll just let it be” people.
This is good family fun. Check it out if you can.
