Charities you should know about in Indianapolis

Zoe Harris, staff writer

I’d like to think that most people have giving hearts and want to make a difference in the world. This is a lot easier said than done. In 2017, 63% of Hoosiers donated to a charity or a nonprofit organization. If you’re a person who wants to see change, but you don’t feel like you can donate right now, staying informed is nonetheless a good idea.

One nonprofit organization that is a good one to be informed about is TechPoint Foundation for Youth (TPF4Y). They promote STEM education for children in communities where opportunities don’t come as easy to them. They are an inclusive organization that is preparing Indiana’s youth for the workforce.

Another organization that you should know about is The Julian Center. It was founded in 1975 to support victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other difficult life circumstances. They offer an important service and are helping to create a community where people feel safe and significant.

One more organization that I believe is worth knowing about is Horizon House. It is an agency that helps people experiencing homelessness achieve their goals and more stable lives. This year, nearly 2,000 people experienced homelessness per night. Being aware of this organization and its efforts is a good way to gradually lower that number.
