A play is always something fun to see, but what is even better? A musical, and this year Ben Davis has one for you to see. They are adding their own twists and turns and bringing you a beautiful production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat this Thursday-Sunday in the BD theatre.
Choir teachers Jerico Hughes and Jason David are co-directors of the musical and they are hoping for an amazing weekend.
The play is a bible story of Jacob’s Favorite son, Joseph. Joseph is sold into slavery by jealous brothers. This is due to the colorful coat his father gifted him.
“The story teaches lessons of forgiveness, love, fame and money,” Hughes said.
The directors have said they are involving more 90s fashion, music, tone, and even the musicals set.
Now a little history about the musical “Joseph and the amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” The original writer of this musical is Tim Rice. The first time this was performed was 54 years ago, March 1, 1968. Rice wrote this to show his “amazing ability to diversify interests.”
Now this is a musical, so who wrote the original songs for this production? That person is Andrew Lloyd Webber. He was a pretty well known impresario in musical theatre. He has won 16 awards over the years.
Back to the present day, our directors this year want to make the musical more “relevant to the students.” They have made changes to give a more 90s aesthetic. Jericho says from sets to lingo has been updated. They seem to want the students to easily get and relate to this as much as possible. These changes will definitely bring more entertainment to their audience.
The first show will be November 2, at 7 p.m. They have three other show times which are November 3, November 4 both starting at 7 p.m., and then the last day is November 5 at 2 p.m.
Come see how the story unfolds and see what jealousy can do to someone.
