In today’s society mental health has become a crucial issue that affects people of all ages. With Septemebr being Suicide Prevention Month, it is a good time to look at how schools can help those in need.
Those affected the most with mental health issues and suicidal thoughts are often teenagers (students). There is so much pressure on teenagers with academic performance, social interactions, and personal development. All those issues have such a big impact on young minds and that’s why it’s important that schools start to prioritize mental health awareness and support for their students.
Mental health education should be put into the school curriculum. As much as we learn about physical health and wellness, we should also be taught about mental health. It is a complex issue that deserves more than just a surface discussion in Impact. I feel like schools don’t mind talking about mental health, but only on a basic level. And I know that that counselors offer help when needed, but I feel deeper discussions in school settings would benefit everyone.
Understanding the signs and symptoms of different mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, etc. is difficult. Learning and educating students on these topics can empower students to seek help when needed and support their peers if needed.
Suicide rates are doubling and trippling every year so this is a chance for schools to be the change. Mental health awareness is more than a special night during the basketball season. It’s an ongoing issue that takes time, patience and the willingness to listen. Sounds like a school project to me.
