So you are a senior and you think college is your next step in life. What’s next?
With applications coming around the corner and essays due, do you know Ben Davis has plenty of help to navigate the college application process. Counselor Kiara Cross is dedicated to helping students get to college and Rebecca Daugherty-Saunders is the director of college and career readiness at Ben Davis.
Cross took time to answer some questions that will help seniors.
What are some advice for seniors as the school year goes?
“I would really recommend just being intentional with planning. Get a planner calendar, time management with school and other activities in your day to day life also take these habits with you in college. Be intentional with timing.”
What applications would you recommend for students who want to apply to colleges?
“One thing I would really say is to research the college you want to go to. See if it aligns with your major and the clubs you want to do. But some apps or things to help seniors with their applications or scholarships would be the common app if you want to apply to lots of colleges but if you are applying to a few colleges I would say to just go to the official website. Big Future is very good.¨
Any essay tips and ways to make your application stand out more?
“Colleges like when students draw them in with a good story. It doesn’t always have to be a sad story or just a general life story. It could be something that did happen in your life that changed your perspective on things. It can be creative and make sure you captivate the reader.¨
What is some advice to seniors that are unsure what to do or decide yet?
¨I encourage you to at least apply to one school. If you are unsure and you apply you have an opportunity open and a window there. You don’t have to apply to just one school. Don’t let yourself be indecisive and do nothing.¨
Any tips that you want to add?
¨Go and support senior college nights, find sources and help around you. Applicants get caught up in getting rejected – do your part and don’t spend time worrying about things. Get it done.”
