Simmons wins pole vault

Hanover’s Jalen Simmons won the pole vault event (13-11 ¼) at the Heartland Conference Championships. Franklin’s Corbin Lee was 15th of 16 in the 5000 (18:01.81).
Indiana State, Vincennes, and Purdue-Fort Wayne competed at the Indiana State Open. Fort Wayne’s Dona Fagnon won the 200 meter dash in a field of 12 (22.59), and Opiew Manamanya of Vincennes ran the anchor leg of the winning 4 X 400 relay team. Fagnon also placed sixth of 13 in the 60 hurdles (8.51). Vincennes Ernest Momodu placed ninth of 14 in the 800 (2:02.93) and was a member of the Vincennes “B” relay team that finished fifth of five in the 4 X 400.
Competing at the Wittenberg Invitational, Indianapolis’ Aaron Trejo placed 49th of 65 in the mile (4:46.61), and teammate Hayden Baldwin was 21st of 32 in the 5000 (16:12.11)
BASEBALL
LSU-Shreveport (12-2, 2-1) swept three games with Texas A & M-Texarkana. Zion Avery, the team’s leading hitter with a.381 average (8 for 21), leader in home runs with 2, and the leader in RBIs with 10, had five hits in 11 at bats in the three games, with one double, one home run, one stolen base, one run scored, and nine RBIs.
WOMENS BASKETBALL
Brianna Jones and Lakeland won their first round game in the Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference Tournament 71-54, defeating Concordia, a team that had just beaten the 54-44 in their previous game. Jones had four points (0 for 5, 0 for 0, 4 for 6), four rebounds, one steal and two turnovers in 22 minutes in the loss; and five points (1 for 6, 0 for 0, 3 for 6), eight rebounds, one assist, and four turnovers in the win.
Toledo (21-4, 15-1) defeated Ohio University 76-73 and Ball State 69-66. Khera Goss had seven points (3 for 4, 1 for 2, 0 for 0), three rebounds, one assist, and one turnover in 21 minutes against Ohio; and eight points (3 for 6, 0 for 2, 2 for 4), three rebounds, one assist, and one steal in 25 minutes against Ball State.
Cherrelle Newsom had three points (1 for 8, 1 for 7, 0 for 0), one assist, one steal, and four turnovers for Wabash Valley (18-8) in an 83-40 defeat of Vincennes.
MENS BASKETBALL
Taylor (9-20, 5-13) lost 79-72 to Indiana Wesleyan and 71-67 to St. Francis. Jeff Clayton had four points (2 for 2), one rebound, one steal, and one turnover in 21 minutes against IWU; and two points (1 for 4) and one rebound in 10 minutes against St. Francis.
St. Mary’s (12-11, 9-5) lost 70 -62 to Texas-Tyler and won 72-68 against Texas A & M-Commerce. Josh Brewer had six points (1 for 6, 0 for 2, 4 for 4), three rebounds, three assists, and one turnover in 22 minutes in the loss; and three points (1 for 4, 0 for 2, 1 for 2), one rebound, two assists, one steal, and one turnover in 18 minutes in the win.
Kaskaskia (17-10, 7-8) defeated the Olivet Nazarene JV 82-81, Sauk Valley 87-50, Highland 94-87, and Wabash Valley 77-60. Jaylen Jennings had five points (1 for 2, 0 for 0, 3 for 4) and three rebounds against Sauk Valley. He played briefly against the JV and did not play against Highland. Stats are not available fr Wabash Valley.
