Evans finishes rookie NFL season

Chris Evans became the fourth Ben Davis graduate to play in the Super Bowl when he and his Cincinnati Bengals lost 23-20 to the Los Angeles Rams. Evans caught one pass for three yards and was targeted twice in the loss. He did not return any kicks.

Evans completes his rookie season with the Bengals and joins graduates Morten Andersen, Corey Harris and Tandon Doss as Super Bowl participants.

WOMENS BASKETBALL

Lakeland (11-11, 7-8) defeated Marian, WI 65-50 , lost 112-67 to Aurora, and defeated Benedictine 69-65. Brianna Jones had team highs of 16 points (6 for 11, 0 for 0, 4 for 8) and 15 rebounds, along with two assists, one steal, and one turnover in 31 minutes against Marian; four points (0 for 4, 0 for 0, 4 for 4), four rebounds, and three turnovers in 15 minutes against Aurora; and seven points (3 for 9, 0 for 0, 1 for 4), three rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one turnover in 23 minutes against Benedictine.

Toledo (19-4, 13-1) defeated Miami 86-63 and Bowling Green 80-51. Khera Goss had six points (3 for 5, 0 for 1, 0 for 0), one rebound, two assists, and one blocked shot in 28 minutes against Miami; and two rebounds, one assist, two steals, one blocked shot, and five missed field goal tries against Bowling Green.

Vincennes (17-7) won 76-59 against Southwestern Illinois and 85-63  against John A. Logan. Cherelle Newsom had six points (2 for 11, 2 for 10, 0 for 0), three rebounds, one steal, and a team high six assists against Southwestern Illinois; and team highs of five assists and 15 points (5 for 10, 5 for 10, 0 for 0), as well as one rebound against John A. Logan.

MENS BASKETBALL

Illinois Central (10-12) defeated Rend Lake 77-68 and Spoon River 66-64 before losing 73-69 to Danville. Josh Shannon played briefly in all three games and had one rebound and two turnovers.

St. Mary’s (11-10, 8-4) lost 88-68 to Angelo State and 84-79 to Oklahoma Christian before winning 73-67 against Arkansas Fort Smith. Josh Brewer had 10 points (4 for 10, 2 for 5, 0 for 0 ), one assist, one turnover and a team high five rebounds in 28 minutes against Angelo State; six points (2 for 7, 0 for 3, 2 for 2), two rebounds, and two assists in 18 minutes against Oklahoma Christian; and eleven points (4 for 8, 2 for 5, 1 for 2), six rebounds, one assist, one blocked shot, and two turnovers in 21 minutes against Fort Smith.

Taylor (9-18, 4-10) lost 67-66 to Spring Arbor and 80-74 to Grace. Jeff Clayton  had two rebounds, one  blocked shot, two steals, one turnover, and two missed shots in 16 minutes against Spring Arbor; and two points (0 for 2, 0 for 0, 2 for 2), one blocked shot, one steal, two assists, one turnover, and a team high seven rebounds in 18 minutes against Grace.

St. Leo (9-13, 4-10) lost 81-74 to Nova Southeastern and 87-84 in Rollins. Rob Fry played two minutes against Nova and missed two shots. He  did not play against Rollins.

Kankakee (14-11) defeat Harry S. Truman 75-51 and lost 84-72 to Triton and 87-49 to Indian Hills. Jaylen Jennings had six points (2 for 5, 0 for 0, 2 for 2), six rebounds, and one blocked shot against Harry S. Truman; three rebounds and two missed shots against Triton; and six points (3 for 4, 0 for 0, 0 for 1) and three turnovers against Indian Hills.

BASEBALL

LSU-Shreveport (10-1) improved its record with five wins. Zion Avery played in four of the games and had three hits in eight at bats, two runs scored, four RBIs, and one stolen base.

Ian Shilling relieved for Cumberland University (2-9) in a 6-4  loss  to Tabor and held Tabor scoreless while striking out one and yielding one hit.

WOMENS INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

Mariah Judy, running for Indianapolis in the Grand Valley Big Meet, placed 65th of 78 in the mile (5:20.98).

Simisola Akinrinola has transferred from Purdue to Kentucky and has been participating in the weight throw and the shot put.  In her first meet, the Cardinal Classic at Louisville, she placed second in the weight throw (61-11.32) and fourth in the shot put (40-9.92). In the two most recent meets, she placed fifth of 19 in the weight throw (59.8.25) at the Tiger Paw Invitational at Clemson; and fourth of 14 in the weight throw (63.04.00)  and 11th of 15 in the shot put (41.05) at Kentucky’s McCrary Invitational.

MENS INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

 Indianapolis and Trine competed at the Gerry England Invitational at the U of I. Trine’s Yosef Solomom placed 14th of 68 in the mile (4:37.73. Indianapolis’ Aaron Trejo, was 37th in the same event (4:51.31). The U of I’s Hayden Baldwin was 15th in the 3000 meters (9:50.02).

Texas’ Jalil Brewer placed 10th in  the shot put (59-0 3/4) at Clemson’s Tiger Paw Invitational.

Maurice Macklin, running for Grace in the Nation Christian College Athletic Association Championships, was a member of the winning 4 X 800 meter relay team (8:16.26) and was 13th of 17 in the 800 (2:02.68).

Franklin’s Corbin Lee placed 20th of 22 in the 3000 (10:18.00) at the DePauw Invitational.

Indiana State and Vincennes competed at Indiana’s Hoosier Hill Invitational. The Sycamores’ Michael Adams placed 12th of 16 in the 60 meters dash (7.20), and Vincennes’ Ernest Mobuto and Opiew Manamanya were members of the distance relay team that finished third of five (10:51.41).
