Quick Hits: Week of February 16-23

Ben Davis:

 

-The wrestling team was in action in the state tournament at Bankers Life Fieldhouse on Friday and Saturday. Of the three state qualifiers we had Norman Oglesby and Dylan Lydy placed taking third and first in their respective weight classes. Kasha Wilder didn’t place but did qualify, which in itself is a feat.

 

-The boys basketball team was in action winning a nail biter in Cathedral, ending the team’s winning streak and finding victory 61-55 in OT. They face Franklin Central tonight in what could be head coach Mark James’ 500th win.

 

Local:

 

-On February 19, Purdue and IU acted out part two of their bi-annual clash that saw Purdue come out on top 67-63.

 

-IU took on the Rutgers Knights on February 23, winning comprehensively 84-54 limiting the East Coast side to only 24 points in the second half.

 

-After a 81-70 win against Boston College, Notre Dame will be looking to continue their form into the week against the Syracuse Orange.

 

-Butler took a rough loss at Xavier this week, losing 56-73 in Cincinnati.

 

-At the NFL combine in Indianapolis, DB Byron Jones broke the combine record in broad jump boasting a 12’3” jump.

 

-Following the All Star break, the Pacers have found a bit of form bringing home wins against the 76ers and the Golden State Warriors. Rodney Stuckey shined for the Pacers achieving 30 points in both wins (106-95 vs 76ers, 104-98 vs Warriors).

 

National:

 

-The dream fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather has been signed. The fight is scheduled for May 2.

 

-Alex Rodriguez returned to training having served his suspension. A-Rod will hope to see action and support from the fans and the team for this coming season.

 

-Aging star Kevin Garnett was traded back to his original team, the Minnesota Timberwolves, in a deal that landed Thaddeus Young in Brooklyn.
-Joey Logano took the checkered flag in this years Daytona 500, while Jeff Gordon crashed on the last lap in his final Daytona 500 appearance.
