Ben Davis calendar year 2024 has been an interesting one to say the least.
This was the first year since the state established a phone policy for schools, which was a huge adjustment. This was not only hard for the students, but for the teachers as well.
Also, the hallways seem a little more crowded due to the reconstruction of what we used to call the “commons,” which is said to be coming along nicely.
Walking in the hallways has been a little more stressful this year, and you had to find alternative routes to make it to your classes on time. Hopefully, soon we will see the finished look for our revamped school.
Construction began the day after the 2023-24 school year ended in June and is expected to take at least another year before completion.
Our sports teams also had some huge things to contribute to this year’s successes. This year’s football season was nowhere near what it was last year. We were beaten in historic fashion (dropping a 38-35 sectional game to Brownsburg despite having a 35-7 halftime lead) one year after winning the state title.
However, our other sports team left us with many highlights. Keith Parker, a class of 2024 student, went to state for wrestling. This was a big win for the boys wrestling team and Parker finished in the top three for all-time wins by a school wrestler.
The boys cross country team went to state as well. It was their first trip to state in 25 years. The calendar year also saw our softball team and volleyball team improve with new coaches at the helm and as the year comes to a close, our swim teams are having success..
Another athletic highlight was the boys basketball team advancing to the Class 4A state final before losing to Fishers. It was the second straight year the boys played for a state title.
Academically, our Spotlight staff was named a Crown award winner by Columbia Scholastic Press Association. That is considered the highest honor a high school publication can receive from CSPA. And several BDTV students are up for national recognition for their work in front of and behind the camera.
It indeed has been an interesting year.
