Bring It On is a musical written by Tom Kitt and Lin Manuel Miranda that follows the story of the world of cheerleading and the competitive nature and rivalries in the sport. At Ben Davis, the Bring It On musical is much more than that.
Bring It On is a popular musical that follows the story of main character Campbell who becomes cheerleading captain at her school, Truman High School, and then is suddenly redistricted and transferred to a new school, Jackson High School. It portrays themes of friendship, rivalry, obsession, etc. as it leads through the story. These important themes are very well written and are shown all throughout the entire musical.
The Musical Theater course is an opportunity afforded to students at BD that combines the arts of singing, dancing, and acting with teaching and learning with benefits for all types of students; whether it is to gain a deeper understanding and knowledge of the arts, self-expression, or a multitude of other things. Bring It On is a musical with a myriad of difficult songs and choreography. Being set in the competitive world of cheerleading, students have to work hard to face challenges they may have never approached before to shape a perfect musical.
Off and on stage, students are constantly learning. Teachers Ben Fraley and Sarah Miller make sure that students are never lost and always know how to do things, and why they are done the way they are. This is extremely important to the students because it helps to gain a better understanding of the art of Musical Theatre. It also gives students reasons to do what they are doing.
In Ben Davis’ Musical Theater course, all students are expected to audition. This helps teachers and directors to cast roles for the musical. It also helps students to learn more about the musical they will be doing early on. Every student in the course will get a role, no one will be left out or excluded.
All of these things come together to make the musical the very best it can be. So It’s not just a musical, and it’s not just a performance. it’s so much more than that. It’s a group of people working together, striving; and being dedicated to their craft, the arts, and themselves.
