Wow. Even that does not adequately summarize what happened at the Ben Davis soccer complex Tuesday night.
The Ben Davis boys made history by capturing their first-ever county championship via 6-5 penalty shootout win over Perry Meridian.
“It was an incredible match,” coach Ola Ladapo said. “It was thrilling; the boys played with such intensity and focus. The atmosphere was electric, and the energy from the team and the crowd was unforgettable. I have never seen anything like this.”
Regulation time ended with the game tied 1-1 so the game went directly to penalty kicks.
Ben Davis PK goals were made by Dustin Estrada Medina (who also scored BDs lone regulation goal), Alan Galvez, Darinel Maus, Emmanuel Njike, Elvin Rivera and Luis Flores. After Flores made his PK, sophomore Edwyn Dominguez made a kick save to secure the win.
“The best memory from this tournament run has to be the Park Tudor game,” Ladapo said. “That was the moment the team indeed came together. They played as one unit, and you could see their confidence grow from that point on. It was a turning point and set the stage for our success.”
The boys play at North Central Thursday night before turning their attention to the Avon sectional, where they play Decatur Central on Tuesday.
