It almost had to end the way it did Friday night at Giants Stadium.
Ben Davis built an 18-point second half lead, saw it evaporate to a 31-28 deficit and then watched senior kicker Ben Rudolph tie the game with 10 second left. Then the exciting semistate affair ended in the first overtime when senior quarterback Thomas Gotkowski found senior receiver Nat Williams crossing in the end zone to seal a 37-34 win over three-time defending state champion Center Grove.
“We finished the evening 1-0,” senior linebacker Drew Evans said. “Now we have one more evening to finish 1-0.”
The Giants will face Crown Point for the 6A state title this Saturday at 7 p.m. at Lucas Oil Stadium. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Ben Davis will be aiming for its 10th state football championship.
