Ben Davis survived a last minute drive and escaped with a 27-24 win over host Cathedral in a Class 6A regional championship last Friday.
The Giants won when senior kicker Ben Rudolph nailed a 40-yard field goal with 2:38 left. The Giants then sealed the win when Alvin Contreras intercepted a last ditch effort by Cathedral in the end zone with 14 seconds left.
Up next is a semistate contest against three-time defending state champion Center Grove this Friday at 7 p.m. at Giant Stadium. Both teams come in with 11-1 record, the Trojans riding a 11-game win streak and Ben Davis winners of eight straight.
Center Grove is riding an 18-game tournament win streak, having last lost in the state tourney in the 2019 state title game against Carmel. The Trojans have beaten Ben Davis in their last seven meetings, with three of those wins coming in a semistate battle. The winner of this game will advance to the Class 6A state title game November 25 in Lucas Oil Stadium. Ben Davis last advanced to the state game in 2017 and the Giants have won nine state football championships titles overall.
