The Performing Arts groups are kicking off their performance season. There are many things to look forward to like, the marching band, choir, theatre and the orchestra.
What to expect from Band
Their show is titled “Squiggles, Stripes, and Style.” It is about the 1980’s art movement created by the Memphis Group.
The band holds their annual invitational this Saturday and will perform at 9:15 p.m. in the football stadium.
The show features colorful art pieces across the field and fun music that brings the style alive. Their goal is to be the best version of themselves that they can be.
They said they are always striving for State Finals but that will not define their success. They look to be better than they were the day before. The Marching Band will be Performing at Lucas Oil Stadium for Bands Of America Indianapolis Regional and they say it is always a highlight of the season.
ISSMA Semi-State, which they host here at BD, is also a performance that brings out everyone’s best.
This year’s leadership team includes drum majors Hikmot Ashafa, Kai Davids, and Theresa Feeney; they conduct the band during the performance. Section leaders are Jonah Gaidoo, Alex Bunch, Ava Morgan, Nevaeh Foster, Mariam Goson, Caleb Corney, Doris Ogunrinde, Laila Winston, Olivia Brents, and Haliyah Saliu. The logistics team is Adam Dalzell, Jason Gonzalez, Shaun Lang, Jai Morgan, and Brian Gutierrez.
What to expect from the Orchestra
Their first concert of the school year is the Spooktakular Concert on October 26. They dress up in costumes and play spooky music.
Their second concert will be in December, when they do holiday pieces. Their goals are much like every year, to get better and keep pushing forward with each group. They want to take each player to the next level. Orchestra Teacher Amy Noble says “It’s a lot like swimming. You are striving for your next level in personal best.”
Noble says they would like to gain the All-Music Award again. The orchestra won that for the first time ever last year. They look forward to the Spooktakular every year.
Noble says she is a huge fan of Halloween and all spooky music.
“The joy of seeing the creative costumes from the students cannot be beat,” Noble said. “They constantly amaze me with their costume creations.”
The orchestra has section leaders for each instrument. Each group is doing chair auditions right now. The first chair of each section will become the section leader. There is also the tradition of having the Violin 1 section leader as the concert master or concert mistress. This person will lead each group through tuning for concerts and takes on a large leadership role in each group. Their section leaders have the responsibility of knowing all correct fingerings and bowings for our current repertoire. They are the first person those group members go to with any questions about music. They help lead them through small group rehearsals and tutor their section when they need help.
What to expect from choir
They have chosen themes for this years competition shows. However, they are currently being kept secret from the cast and public. This anticipation will help in the successful preparation for a strong season.
The musical this year is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and will be performed
This year’s goal for choir is to return to the status of performances in which they use to consistently execute before the pandemic.
Choir teacher Jerico Hughes said “We have still seemed to struggle to find our performance “feet” since then and we are looking forward to finally overcoming adversities this year. We are also excited to share our unique stories this season.”
This year, and every year, they look forward to their performance at Giant Spectacular. This annual event brings thousands of patrons to the building and ends in a pinnacle performance of the host group, Premiers. With the help of hundreds of volunteers and many hours of preparation, Giant Spectacular is one of the largest fundraisers for the choral department and is held in February.
