Teacher of the year
Business teacher receives the highest honor for an educator
March 26, 2014
Teacher of the Year is an award given to one outstanding teacher at each school in the district. Last year Ben Davis had English teacher, Mrs. Bacon. This year, we have business teacher Jennifer Schultz.
Schultz grew up in South Bend, Indiana and went to South Bend Riley High School. As she started looking at careers, she says it was hard for her to choose between accounting and teaching. After talking with her high school accounting teacher, business education was introduced and recommended to her. Off she went to ISU.
Today, she teaches classes such as beginning accounting, advanced accounting, computerized accounting, entrepreneurship and computer applications. The things she does throughout the day range from “person of the day,” celebrating birthdays, PBLs and working with BD Business Buddies.
But in 1998, Schultz tells us that after student teaching, Ben Davis was the place she wanted to be. And in the fall of 2002, she started her official job. She says her favorite part about working here is the business department itself.
“The teachers and students are the best,” Schultz said.
Her initial reactions when finding out she won the award were shock and speechlessness.
“It is one of the greatest honors you can achieve here at BD,” Schultz said. “Saying that I am T.O.Y. at the largest high school in Indiana is amazing. It is very humbling knowing that my peers think very highly of me and my teaching.”
From myself and Spotlight, congratulations Mrs. Schultz!
