Dexter was originally aired in 2006. It debuted on Showtime and it’s a story that details the life of a man, Dexter Morgan, who works as a forensic technician but has a secret other life as a serial killer.
This psychological crime thriller was based off Darkly Dreaming Dexter, a novel written by author Jeff Lindsey and has become quite popular in its years, even sporting a sequel to the original television series, Dexter: New Blood. So you can imagine my surprise and slight apprehension with the new prequel to the series, Dexter: Original Sin.
Dexter: Original Sin sits on the Dexter Morgan timeline 15 years before the first season of the original Dexter series and illustrates Dexter’s dive into madness as it follows the early years of his profession as a forensic technician.
The star of the show? Patrick Gibson. After his performances in other admittedly nondescript films and series, it was highly shocking to see Gibson fitting the role of Dexter Morgan. Gibson was not only able to sculpt himself into another version of Michael C. Hall, original Dexter Morgan actor in Dexter, but he was also able to display parts of Dexter Morgan viewers and fans had never seen before leading to a wonderfully curated psychological thriller. Dexter: Original Sin is 10 episodes, each running 40-60 minutes long.
It’s a great sit-down, binge series if you love crime, thriller, and psychology and overall most definitely worth the watch. Immediately, I was drawn in by the opening episodes and as I continued, I was not disappointed by the trajectory of the rest of them.
All of the elements pulled together to perfectly intertwine and create something that was difficult to pause, and the obligatory Dexter Morgan voiceover and monologue was perfect for bringing it all together. The actors, as well as the cinematography, filmography, and just the subject matter did well to create a suspenseful as well as maybe even a nostalgic atmosphere; abridged to something just like the original 2006.
With Dexter. Dexter, Dexter: New Blood, and now Dexter: Original Sin, I’m terribly excited to see what’s next in store for Dexter Morgan and friends.
